North by Northwest
Roger Thornhill is an advertising executive who leads a fairly simple and uncomplicated life till the day he checks in at the Plaza Hotel in New York and coincidently calls for a bellhop who is paging “George Kaplan.” Being mistaken as Kaplan, Thornhill is kidnapped by strangers who take him to the house of Lester Townsend on Long Island. He is interrogated by an international spy, Phillip Vandamm, who believes him to be the CIA agent, George Kaplan. Thornhill repeatedly denies that he is Kaplan and in the end Vandamm gets tired of his stories and orders him men to get rid of him. Thornhill is forced to drink a bottle of bourbon and is set behind the wheels of a car on a steep slope to stage a tragic accident. By sheer luck, Thornhill is stopped by a few police officers who arrest him for DUI. When Thornhill shares his story, no one believes him, not even his own mother. To prove himself innocent, he takes them all back to Townsends house, the woman there claims that he got drunk at her dinner party. Confused and worried, Thornhill takes a cab to the General Assembly Building of the United Nations where Townsend is about to deliver a speech. He is shocked to find out the Townsend is not the man who had captured him and before he can get anymore answers, someone throws a knife into Townsend back and he falls into Thornhill`s arms, making him look like the killer. Thornhill escapes the authorities and goes on to find Kaplan so that he can prove himself innocent. Running around the country as a fugitive he is helped by the stunning Eve Kendall. Unknown to Thornhill, Eve is the lover of Vandamm and is working for him. So it is up to Thornhill to be his own guard and clear his name.
The film is indeed a witty Hitchcock thriller. It is full of entertainment, romance, suspense and humor all in equal quantities which make this film one of Hitchcock’s best productions ever!
