Seven Samurai
A Japanese village is inhibited by poor farmers constantly under attack by outlaws. When one of the villagers overhears a gang of bandits planning to attack the village, he immediately informs the village chiefs. The news brings great distress to the villagers because they are poor and cannot afford weapons and training, so they turn to the village elders for help. The elders suggest that the villagers find and hire a samurai to guard their town at the price of three meals a day because that is all the villagers can afford to give.
A few men leave for the city in search of a samurai to guard their village. Initially they are unsuccessful as most of the well trained and talented samurai are unwilling to work for such a small price. Some of the samurai are even impolite and rude towards the village men, which leaves them very disheartened. Just as they are about to give up and head back to their village, the men meet Kambei Shimada. Kambei is kindhearted and generous so he agrees to help the villagers protect their home. He suggests that they would need at least seven samurai to protect the village and agrees to help them find men suitable for the job. Kambei recruits the necessary five samurai and the brave jester Kikuchiyo and they head towards the village.
Upon their arrival, the villagers cower in their homes in fear, hoping to protect their daughters and themselves from these supposedly dangerous warriors. This offends the warriors because they expected a warm welcome but soon they gain the trust of the villagers and their families. As time passes, the samurai train the villagers for battle working hard and tirelessly. Before long, the battle between the bandits and the villagers begins. It is the ultimate clash between good and evil and both will fight till death.
Seven Samurai is one of the few Japanese films to acclaim such international popularity. It is indeed a fine piece of art. It depicts the Japanese samurai culture very profoundly and demonstrates the sacrifices that human beings make for each other.
