Submarine
Richard Ayoade directed submarine is a very new and entertaining film which the British Film Industry has not seen in a long time. The movie is set in the modern era with a teenage boy as its narrator. He is the central character and is a 15 yr old boy named Oliver (Craig Roberts). His characteristics resemble Dustin Hoffman’s Benjamin Braddock in the Graduate. Oliver leads his life by thinking of alternate realities but the film reveals him to be not the most efficient of narrators. He foresees his death and in turn speculates what effect his death would bring to the world in which he lives, to his fellow classmates. He goes to the extent of imagining how these would be portrayed on film and how those films might end. He is intensely weighed down by two problems in his life- One is losing his virginity to his beautiful but unromantic classmate Jordana (Yasmine Paige) and the second is saving his parent’s marriage. His dad (Noah Taylor) is a marine biologist who becomes depressed and home sick after losing his job as a Open University Lecturer. His mother (Sally Hawkins) is a twin set type but harbors a passion for the small town new age guru (Paddy Considine). The story telling style which the directors employ is a combination of the French New Wave, American Indies of the late 90’s and superior British comedy. The shadow of the French Cinema of the 60’s falls most heavily on the film. The director has made the movie a very fast passed which leaves the watcher no room for being bored. It catches on to the viewer in each and every scene. There are jump cuts, flash backs and forwards which make the movie most intriguing. The film is set in first – person and the director stress that other people are both unknowledgeable and intriguing. Today movies can be watched online and viewers can take advantage of this facility to watch movies online. It can be downloaded for free and this is very convenient for home viewing. Downloading free movies take a bit of time and computer space but it comes easy on the pocket for people with cheap internet connections. The wallpapers of the movie are of the very colorful type and the film attracts viewers through its wallpapers. Overall the movie makes a must watch for any average viewer.
