The Art Of Getting By
George is a lonely teen who has made it all the way to his senior year without ever having done a real day of work. It’s not until he meets Sally, a popular yet complicated girl, that he starts to find some color in his otherwise dull existence. Both Freddie Highmore and Emma Roberts do proper justice to the roles of George and Sally respectively. Highmore starts getting romantically involved with Roberts, but lacks the courage or conviction to admit his feelings. George dares to step out of his comfort box with the help of Sally and unofficial mentor, Dustin (Michel Angarano). Dustin plays a major role in making George realize his potential as an artist while Sally introduces him to the real teenage world, which comprises of drinking, partying, hookups and random adventures. In an otherwise plain storyline, the cast infused life into the characters with great supporting roles, right from Rita Wilson to Elizabeth Reaser.
While this movie may not make a long-term mark, it is definitely a one-time watch due to its awkwardly cute and realistic nature, something that is very hard to find in teen flicks these days. If you do not wish to go the theatres to catch this one, you always have the option to download it online for free and then watching it at your own convenience.
It is a tale of a couple of kids trying to find some happiness in the world as they navigate school, sex, parents, peers and the usual things that seem insurmountable at that age.
The Art Of Getting By is a coming-of-age film for sensitive late bloomers and is a winner for the sheer significance of the social message it conveys – that if you do not wake up in time, the whole world will not take a minute to fall down and crush at your feet. First-time writer-director Gavin Wiesen does a splendid job and comes up with a sweet and cute teenage rom-com that hopefully everyone would like.
There’s a lot at play here but somehow, it’s a bit cool and detached and fails to completely engage.
So should you watch The Art Of Getting By at a theatre near you? Well, its up to you but the advise from here would be to give it a miss and save your precious money.
