The King’s Speech

by Vlad Marin on July 7, 2011

The King’s Speech is based on the true life events of George VI who suffered from a terrible problem of stammering. While being a young prince, his problem was very serious and he couldn’t speak a single sentence correctly, even though his father, the King, tried to make him get rid of this problem. The King considers George a far better option and candidate for next king as compared to his elder brother David, who is a careless and indulgent young man. After attempting treatment of this problem several times but failing each time, George completely gives up. His wife eventually requests him to meet a therapist named Lionel Logue. George reluctantly meets the therapist since by now he has give up all hope. With the very first lesson, during which Lionel gives George a famous passage from Hamlet to read, Lionel makes George realize that his condition can be considerably improved. Hence begin formal therapy lessons between Lionel and George. On the other hand, after the death of the King, David is declared the next King and takes throne as King Edward VIII but his careless ways do not change. After becoming the King, he still wants to marry Wallis Simpson who is a divorced American lady. Since this is against the rules of being a King, Edward leaves the throne in favor of George. George, on the other hand, has been constantly taking therapy lessons with Lionel and his condition has considerably been improved, although he has not been completely cured of his problem. Finally, the most important occasion arrives, when George, as a King, has to address the nation to clarify Britain’s position in the World War. Although George is not completely sure of himself; his confidence is increased with constant encouragement by Lionel and his wife. Finally, the speech begins and George manages to complete the entire speech without any serious stammering problem, which was indeed a huge achievement. The film depicts the entire story of determination, courage, love and friendship is a very touching manner. The writer of the story, David Seidler himself used to suffer from stammering and decided to write this story after getting rid of his stammering problem. The film received high critical acclaim and won Oscar for the best picture.
